New Report from the 1/12th Scale Japanese Nationals!!!!
2005/10/17

Team Yokomo - 1/12th Scale Japanese National Champions!

Team Yokomo was back this year to defend the JMRCA 1/12th Japanese National Championship title. The event this year was held at Yatabe Arena, the world reknown high speed indoor asphalt circuit located in Tsukuba City. During race week, track grip progressively improved, and provided for ideal race conditions. The entire Yokomo team used the just-released RC-12L4Y World Edition 2006, and Yokomo IB3800 batteries.

This year's Japanese Nationals was held over 3 days, with over 120 racers from all over Japan competing in a best of 5 qualifying format to determine each racer's grid spot in the finals. On the first day, practice rounds were held to sort out the track conditions, followed by 2 qualifying rounds. Hirosaka, reknown for his 1/12th scale prowess, finished on top of the qualifying order this day, but was followed closely by 4 other competitors who were within a mere 1.5 seconds of his time, leaving little to no room for mistakes.

Scattered showers on the second day brought in humidity, which seemed to improve the track conditions even further. A practice round and 3 qualifiers were scheduled this day, and although Hirosaka set the fastest time in the 3rd round, newly crowned Offroad Japanese National Champion Kimura and other fellow team members raised their pace and moved up the order in round 4. The highly anticipated 5th and final round of qualifying belonged to Kimura, setting incredible lap times and putting in a fantastic run that would allow him to secure the TQ spot over Hirosaka.

Rain continued on the third day, but track conditions were still good. Making it into the A-final were Kimura, Hirosaka, Maruyama, Fukuda and Akira Suzuki of Team Yokomo, Kitazawa of Team Futaba, and privateers Sakamoto and Mitsumizo, all of whom used the Associated RC12. In the first final, Hirosaka took the lead at the start, and never looked back to take the win. Kimura recovered from an early crash and worked his way up to finish third. The second final saw Hirosaka showcase his true strength. Capitalizing on Kimura's mistake on the opening lap, Hirosaka took the lead and extended it to where he was able to cruise to the finish for the win, and the championship. The fierce battle for remaining podium spots ended with Kitazawa in second overall, after finishing second in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds, followed by top qualifier Kimura in third overall.

New Ryuji Miki wins the D1 Grand Prix at Silverstone!
2005/10/3

The first ever UK D1 Grand Prix event was held October 2nd, at the Silverstone Circuit. Located an hour's drive from Birmingham Int'l Airport, this circuit is world-reknown for the F1 races held there.

Staff from both Yokomo and CML Distribution(Yokomo UK Distributor) were on hand to support the D1 drivers, as well as the event by setting up a booth and r/c drift demonstration track.

And now for the event report! Text by Masami Hirosaka

The winner of the event was none other than last year's series champion, Ryuji Miki. Driving his TOP SECRET Nissan Silvia S15, Ryuji Miki beat out Kumakubo of Team Orange in the final tsuiso battle.

Although there were scary moments, like when he lost it into the gravel traps during his warm-up run, he showed what champions are made of, winning the first ever UK D1 Grand Prix.

The kitchen staff in the paddock were hard at work preparing japanese meals for the drivers, supporters, and race staff that were a long way from home. The home cooking was undoubtedly a great source of energy. Thank you for the delicious meal!

The drift cars were run on the same sections of track that the F1 cars run on, and pit work was done in the same paddock used by the F1 teams. Pictured here are tires from Ken Nomura's Blitz Skyline. Just to give you an idea of the amazing power that these cars put out, these tires were worn down to the steel belt in a matter of a couple runs.

Fans were lined up at the gates early in the morning. It was announced that roughly 5,000 people were in attendance, but looking at the filled grandstands and the amount of people overflowing into the surrounding areas, it seemed more like 10,000 people.

The two main corners that were judged are taken at over 150km/hr. Here is Ken Nomura's Blitz Nissan Skyline ER34 coming off the last corner.

The two people pictured in the center are D1 Grand Prix founder and top adviser Daijiro Inada(right), and Manabu 'Mana-P' Suzuki(left), D1 judge and commentary announcer. The 'D' in D1 is said to have originated from Drift, Drift King, and 'Daijiro'.

The head of the D1 Grand Prix organization, Keiichi Tsuchiya. English commentary was provided, but it was nothing like Manabu Suzuki's animated commentary we were used to. Although, in the control tower, I heard it was quite exciting.

During the break between qualifying and the tsuiso rounds, a 'Pit-Walk' was provided. As you can see, people swarmed the paddock to get a glimpse of the cars and drivers up close. Something you don't see very often in other motorsports, definitely the appeal of the D1 Grand Prix.

The Yokomo booth area consisted of a display/selling booth and demo track. Here in the UK, complete Drift Package Sets priced at \50,000 sold very well. Many customers also purchased bodies and accessories. The drift tires and wheels that were brought in aplenty sold out quickly.

Similar to what we've experienced at the D1 events in Japan, the UK fans were easily drawn to the r/c drift cars. The five sales people inside the Yokomo booth were constantly being bombarded with questions. "How much does it cost? How does this car drift? Is it already built?" were some of the more frequent questions.

About 10 drivers from the local R/C club helped provide demonstrations throughout the day. Several fans that brought along their own Drift Package cars also joined in on the fun.

Of the 22 drivers that competed (16 japanese and 6 european), all 4 Yokomo-sponsored cars finished in the top 8. Kazama's(Kei Office Nissan Silvia S15) acrobatic performance, Imamura's(Apexera Mazda RX-7 FD3S) consummate overtaking, Nomura's first corner drift distance, and Miki's driving technique amazed the fans.

At the end of the event, commemorative photos were taken with the drivers holding their r/c cars in front of the Silverstone circuit banner.

Event details are also available on the official D1 Grand Prix website.

The S15 was used by Ryuji Miki for this event only. He will be using the ORC Z33 for all D1 events in Japan.

New Chris Grainger Secures British Title!!
2005/9/27

This years final round of the BRCA Touring Car Championship took place at the compact, but extremely quick Bedworth track in the Midlands. Yokomo/CML Team leader Chris Grainger was already in a strong position to secure the overall title and made no mistake at this final round by taking TQ in qualifying. Despite some adverse weather conditions Chris did enough in the finals to bring home the 2005 BRCA CHampionship with his Yokomo BD.

In an excellent show of support fellow Yokomo UK drivers Olly Jefferies, Lee Woodhams and Andrew Robson all made the A Final making the Yokomo BD the most popular car in the main.

Congratulations to Team Yokomo UK!

New 1/12 All-Japan Nationals Pre-Event Information!!
2005/9/26

1/12 All-Japan National Championships Pre-event information from Team Yokomo!

The entire team will be using the recently released RC-12L4 WORLD EDITION Ver. 2006. This kit includes all of the prototype parts that were used to win the World's, as well as placing 6 cars in the A-final at last year's Japanese Nationals.

Here's the latest information for those of you participating this year.

First on the list of topics is tires. Last year, Masami Hirosaka used Yokomo L-rubber Soft in the rear, and L-rubber Medium in the front. Both were pre-mounted on Yokomo wheels. Team Driver Shinya Kimura has tried the L-rubber Medium fronts, but because they make the car too aggressive, has chose the L-rubber Firm. Expect front and rear tire diameters to be about 42mm.

The body of choice will likely be the Parma Speed8, the same as last year. Another likely choice is the Protoform Speed12.

Currently we are testing both the Yokomo Z3700GB and Yokomo X3800IB batteries, but because the results have been close, both types are being readied. As the traction picks up during the event, we plan to compare the two, and then decide. Although at the moment, the X3800IB (Peak-Matched 4 cell pack) is recommended.

Motors in the 9-turn range are expected. Last year, Masami used a 10-turn, while the Suzuki brothers Hiroshi and Akira used 8-turns.

All members of the team will be pitting in the outdoor tent near the track entrance, so please free to stop by and ask questions.

Participating Team Yokomo Divers:
Masami Hirosaka
Shinya Kimura
Hiroshi Suzuki
Ichiro Fukuda
Akira Suzuki
Shohei Maruyama
Manabu Tanaka

New Team Yokomo Is Getting Ready To Race!!
2005/9/23

2005 JMRCA Electric Touring Car Expert Class All-Japan Nationals

Gearing up for a tough race ahead.

The JMRCA Touring Car Expert Class Japanese Nationals is scheduled to be held 11/4 to 11/6 at KAWABA RC Speedway, in the town of Kawaba located in the Gunma prefecture. Possibly the most competitive category in electric racing, it is a tough race where each year, the win is very hard fought. Since the inaugural event, Yokomo has won and held the title 9 consecutive years. Team Yokomo is gearing up for this race, as we will fight hard to secure a win, and possibly a 10th consecutive title.

We have already been to Kawaba several times now, and at the current moment, are in the process of selecting the chassis we will be using, as well as materials. I'm sure most you are wondering whether we will be using the shaft-driven LCG or the belt-driven BD. My laptimes with both cars have pretty much been the same, and since both are uniquely good, I have not been able to decide on one or the other. We will be working on obtaining more data as we test both cars within the team, and by the race, we hope to have a setting sheet available.

This year our team is looking young again, with the addition of a few new members. Takeshi Yokoyama, the 2000 Sportsman Class National Champion, and Naoto Matsukura, who became the 2004 Sportsman Class National Champion at only 12 years old. These new young drivers are very friendly and accessible, so please do not hesitate to approach them with questions. At the Nationals this year, we are planning to have a much bigger tent area, so we welcome everyone to stop by and ask questions, as we will be more than happy to provide setup advice. If you happen to have any questions regarding a Yokomo chassis, please feel free to approach any of our team drivers at any time.

Setups For The Upcoming JMRCA Sportman-Class Events!!
2005/9/22
In support of BD and SD users competing at the JMRCA Sportsman Class Kanto-Regionals on 9/25(Sun) and Japanese Nationals, Team Yokomo Driver Hiroshi Suzuki has prepared setup sheets for both the BD and SD LCG. The latest versions are now available at yatabearena.com

As recently reported, both the SD and BD have had impressive showings lately. On 9/4 at the Kanto-Regionals held at Kawaba Circuit, the SD finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The following weekend at the Chukyo-Regionals on 9/11, the MR-4TC BD(Belt Drive) finished 1st and 2nd.

We look forward to seeing both the SD and BD do well at the upcoming JMRCA All-Japan Sportsman Class Nationals!

Masami Hirosaka's 2005 Plastic Model & RC Show Report!!
2005/9/21
Masami Hirosaka reporting from the Yokomo booth!
Hello everyone, this is Masami Hirosaka reporting from the 2005 Plastic Model & Radio Control Show, currently being held at the Big Site in the Odaiba district of Tokyo. As always, the show floor is buzzing with new products. At our Yokomo booth we have many new products on display, which I will be introducing.

Our first introduction is the all new RC12L4Y WORLD EDITION Ver. 2006 1/12th Onroad car. Many of you may have already seen or read about the car in the magazines, but at the show we have it available so you can hold it up close to view all the fine details. Based on the Associated RC12L4, added are Yokomo chassis parts, a low CG rear pod, and a larger diameter diff. It has so far proven to be an exceptional performer on our domestic tracks, and of course, I will be running this car at the upcoming JMRCA Nationals in October.

The MR-4TC SD LCG has also been upgraded, and as you can see we have added molded diff covers. The SD bulkheads are machined aluminum for the utmost in precision, but due to the open design, the small rocks found on some tracks may cause gear problems. Therefore we developed a cover to protect the entire gear. These are very light in weight, so I highly recommend them!

Recommended for Drift enthusiasts is our new DRIFT PRO speed controller. Based on the KO VFS-1(forward-only) high-end model, this unit comes pre-programmed with settings for optimum mid-range feel, which is very important for drifting. In addition, the capacitor and motor/battery connectors come pre-installed, so all that is required is to mount the unit onto the chassis. To those of you competing in our DRIFT MEETING series, I highly suggest that you give this unit a try.

Here we have our new Yokomo Z3700GB ZAP2 cells with increased capacity. The stick packs are currently available, and the unassembled matched batteries will be released soon. These batteries have very good power, and match up very well with 23T touring car stock motors.

This is a display sample of a motor break-in stand that we are currently considering. It provides a stable mount, and is the perfect tool for checking motors. It is made of aluminum, and helps dissipate heat as well.

Our recently released TIRE SANDER PRO for touring car tires. It is compact, quiet, precision-built, and a real pleasure to use.

On display is our newest 4WD offroad car used at the recent Offroad World Championships. Offroad fans will be happy to know that the specifications of the production version will be virtually unchanged from the one you see here.

Drift fans! We apologize for the long delay. The long awaited HKS Altezza will be available shortly. We appreciate your patience.

So there you have it, our latest product offerings at this show. These are all products we are very proud of, and are confident that you will enjoy them as much as we do!

The Worlds in Italy
2005/8/29
Worlds Report by Masami Hirosaka

After a 6 year break since the 1999 Offroad Worlds held in Finland, Yokomo is back with an all-new machine.

The Pre-Worlds in June gave us an opportunity to come to grips with the car, and a much better understanding of what was needed. After several small modifications, including some of which were made up to the very last minute, 4 cars were prepared, and brought to Italy.

The prototypes were prepared for 4 drivers - Hirosaka, Adachi, Hiroshi Suzuki, and current European Champion, Neil Cragg of England. Amongst a field of over 100 entries, it was decided to enter a small but well-focused team consisting of the abovementioned members. Paul Bradby, who usually races alongside Neil Cragg, prepared for the race using a BJ4. But after testing Neil's Yokomo prototype during controlled practice, elected to use the Yokomo prototype for the race.

In the 1st round of qualifying, Hirosaka set the 3rd fastest time, backed up by a 1st place run in the 2nd round. At this point, Hirosaka held the top spot, with a fairly large gap to 2nd place in the overall standings. After some mistakes in his subsequent runs, Hirosaka dropped a spot to 2nd place in the overall qualifying standings. Neil put in solid runs to qualify 3rd, while Paul put in equally impressive runs to secure a spot in the finals. Despite the race not even being over, we were surprised to receive congratulations from many rival teams. Since the finals were not even run yet, we assumed they were congratulating us on our new car. The car must have really looked good. In the finals, both Hirosaka and Neil took turns leading the field, with both having really good chances at the win.

Unfortunately, we ended up just short of a win, with Neil placing 2nd overall. Neil continued his impressive showing with a win in the 2wd class, and was crowned the new 2wd World Champion. Neil is already at work in preparation for the British Nationals series in his native England, currently working on a setup for the Yokomo prototype on grass surfaces. In the upcoming months we will be working hard towards the release of the new buggy, so stay tuned!

All the exciting 2WD and 4WD A-main action captured on DVD. Available 10/05!! DVD-05BW ($TBA)
